Toronto 2015 Men's Artistic Gymnastics Qualification

Toronto 2015 men's artistic gymnastics qualification came down to the 2014 Pan American Championships in Mississauga. The union's September 2014 list gave 57 places to 20 nations: five each to the top eight teams, two or three to the next four, one each to eight more. Only one place changed hands: Costa Rica's second, which went to Venezuela.

The September 2014 list, line by line

The men's list — Países clasificados a Juegos Panamericanos 2015, Gimnasia Artística Masculina — is a single page with a three-letter code and a number per line, and a total at the foot: "57 Gimnastas en total / 20 Federaciones". It prints Trinidad and Tobago as TTO, its code at the IOC; the Pan American Games use TRI. The basis column below is not on the list; it follows the qualification rules.

How the 57 places were won

The Toronto 2015 sport technical manual, as summarised by Wikipedia, set out the men's quota like this: the top eight teams in the team competition took five places each; teams ranked 9 to 13 took two each; and seven more places went to the best all-around gymnasts, at most one per nation, from countries without a team place.

Mississauga did not fill that pattern. Only 12 nations entered the men's team competition, so the two places meant for a 13th team moved to the individual route, making nine. Only eight eligible nations had gymnasts in the all-around, so the ninth individual place went back to the ninth-placed team, Argentina — the "2 + 1" on the list.

Costa Rica declined one of its two places and it passed to Venezuela, which had finished among teams 9 to 12. Every other line of the list stands, and the 20 nations on it are the 20 that sent men to Toronto.

Frequently asked questions

How many men competed in artistic gymnastics at the 2015 Pan American Games?

57, from 20 nations. Eight nations sent full teams of five.

Why does the list say "ARG - 2 + 1"?

Argentina won two places as one of teams 9 to 12, plus one individual place that no other nation could use, because only eight eligible nations had all-around gymnasts.

Why did Venezuela have three men instead of two?

Costa Rica won two places but used only one; the place it declined was given to Venezuela.
